Mission
To empower refugee, displaced, and hosting communities around the world through promoting literacy and education.
Goals: Refuge Read operates with the goals of providing its programs and resources to refugee communities and refugee hosting communities in collaboration with national governments, other non-governmental organizations, and the United Nations through:
1. Supporting Individuals with Disabilities
Identify individuals with disabilities (physical, emotional, learning, psychological) living within or around refugee camp areas
Connect identified individuals with other NGO/governmental organizations in the host country to provide needed assistance
Disseminate information to refugee camp communities about disabilities and how to support individuals with disabilities
2. Library to Library Project
Collect a variety of textbooks, reference, fiction, non-fiction, French, Arabic, English, and children’s books in the United States Send collected books/educational supplies to Uganda
Facilitate the transportation from the port in Uganda to the refugee camp Construct libraries using existing structures or creating a new structure within refugee camps
Purchase books in Uganda that includes: books written in local languages, books from local authors, and books of local concerns/topics Build a computer resource center with internet to help connect refugees to current events, educational topics, and vocational training
Hire librarians/computer lab personnel and groundskeepers to maintain the library (maintaining a close ratio of employees of nationals to refugees)
Collect artwork, short stories, poems, and essays from people within the refugee camp and share collected work from refugees with people in the United States through displaying work in US libraries, schools, and offices
3. Promoting Education & Literacy
Evaluate the current literacy rate and educational attainment levels within the refugee camp
Create literacy clubs within camps with the goal of increasing education and literacy within the camp
Improve the structural conditions of classrooms/learning environments (constructing classrooms, painting classrooms, and repairing classrooms)
Construct classrooms/art/science labs within school compounds
Increase the school’s capacity to offer music, arts, choir, sports and dance classes/activities through providing needed equipment/resources
Provide professional development opportunities for teachers’ to increase teacher’s capacity to teach
Provide logistical support to students for secondary and post-secondary opportunities based on scholarship, service, and character
Use individual’s artwork as an income generating activity for art groups and Refugees Read
Disseminate information about refugees in the United States through workshops in schools and having booths at community events
Provide opportunities for non-Ugandans to travel to Uganda to help facilitate the activities of Refugees Read
Refugees Read Refugees Read has sent over 5,500 pounds of books to refugee camps in Uganda
